Demonstrations at the Károlyi-statue

Demonstrations at the Károlyi-statue against the government’s policies on nationalities

"Down with the government, down with Trianon" – shouted the demonstrators on Sunday walking from the Károlyi Mihály-statue to the Kempinski Hotel. The speakers called upon the head of government to apologize and to resign.

The World Alliance of Hungarians, the Movement for a Better Hungary and the Sixty-four Counties Youth Movement held a demonstration in Budapest on Sunday afternoon. The demonstrators protested against the government’s policies on nationalities as far as it affects Hungarians living outside Hungary’s borders.

The crowd gathered at the Károlyi Mihály statue next to the Parliament building walked to Erzsébet square where in front of Hotel Kempinski some letters of Hungarians living in the surrounding countries and western countries were read out loud: allegedly the Hungarians living abroad have been staggered and are protesting because Prime Minister Péter Medgyessy together with Minister of Foreign Affairs László Kovács and former President of the Republic Árpád Göncz participated at a party given by Romanian Prime Minister Adrian Nastase at Hotel Kempinski celebrating Romania’s National Holiday on December 1-st.

The leaflet calling for demonstration was confiscated in a public photocopier shop. – Editorial -
